If you’re planning on restoring the appearance of your teeth with the help of veneers, you may have a few questions about the procedure. Thankfully, this treatment is very common, and your dentist has extensive experience in making it as streamlined as possible. Here’s what you can expect from the process from start to finish, and why yes, you really do need to wear temporary veneers.
What Are Veneers?
Veneers are thin porcelain shells that fit over your teeth to make them appear whiter and brighter. They also can correct minor things like shape, size, and even slight spacing issues, all in one treatment. Veneers can last for up to 20 years with proper care, but for them to last as long as possible you’ll need to do your part. You will still need to brush your teeth twice a day, floss once a day, and to ensure that your prosthetics stay in great shape you should switch to a soft bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste.
Why Do I Need Temporary Veneers?
You may have heard of temporary veneers before, but perhaps you don’t understand why you need them. These prosthetics are an important step in your treatment because before your dentist can apply your permanent veneers, he or she will need to remove some enamel from your teeth so they will fit properly. When this happens, your teeth will not be as strong as they were and will be vulnerable to decay and cavities. They will also be more sensitive to extreme temperatures and acidic foods. To keep them safe and healthy until your permanent set is ready, you will need to wear temporary veneers. These will be removed and replaced with real ones once they have been delivered to your dentist’s office from the lab (in about two weeks after your impressions are made).
With temporary veneers, it is important to be careful with your diet. Don’t eat anything too hot or too cold, avoid acidic foods and beverages, and don’t eat anything too chewy or crunchy.
What Happens After I Get My Permanent Veneers?
Once your temporary veneers are removed, the permanent set will be attached. Your teeth should no longer feel sensitive to heat, cold, or acidic foods. You can once again enjoy a full diet; however, to ensure that your teeth remain looking healthy and beautiful, you’ll still need to take care of them by regularly brushing and flossing. Though they are stain resistant, you should still be careful to avoid dark foods and beverages, and if you smoke, quit for your overall health and for the longevity of your new smile.
With proper care and maintenance, your new veneers will last up to 20 years, but because you do need some enamel removed to get them, be aware that you will always need to have veneers going forward. This is to ensure that they remain strong and healthy.
Remember, veneers are a great way to give you a more beautiful smile, but to get the results you want, you’ll need to be patient and wear temporary ones until the final set is ready. Once your treatment is complete, you can look forward to enjoying a beautiful smile for years to come!
