Frequently Asked Dental Questions - Upper Arlington, OH

Straight Answers from Local Dental Experts

There is A LOT of dental information online, but how much of it is actually provided by local dentists you can visit? Below, our team has answered some of the most common questions we hear in person and see online. Be sure to give us a call if you want to know more about something we haven’t covered here!

Do you see children at your dental practice?

Yes, Tzagournis Dental Group of Upper Arlington is able to see patients of all ages, and this includes the youngest members of your family. We welcome children into our practice and know how to keep little ones calm while providing services suited to their rapidly growing smiles. We’re also able to accommodate special needs children, so please reach out to us if you have a unique smile at home!

How often should I visit the dentist?

It depends on the state of your oral health, but in most cases, two dental checkups and teeth cleanings a year is enough. This gives our team ample opportunity to examine your teeth and remove plaque buildup before it has a chance to create cavities and decay. For people with gum disease, it might be better for them to come in more often—about every three to four months.

Can I skip flossing if my gums always bleed?

This is unintuitive, but if your gums bleed whenever you floss, you actually should floss more often. The reason they are bleeding is because they are inflamed due to low-level gum disease, and more frequent flossing is the best way to remove the debris that is causing it. After consistently flossing for about a week, the bleeding should stop as your gum health improves. If not, be sure to come see us, as the infection might be more advanced.

Should I brush my teeth after lunch?

The American Dental Association recommends that everyone should brush their teeth once in the morning and again in the evening for at least two minutes, but many wonder whether they should brush in the middle of the day as well. The answer is that it depends. If you’re prone to cavities despite brushing twice a day, then yes, brushing after lunch is advised. If your checkups are typically clear right now with just brushing twice, then you shouldn’t need to do it.

Will my visit be different if I haven’t been to the dentist for a long time?

No, we will not treat you differently if you haven’t been to the dentist for years or even decades. We aren’t here to judge you or make you feel self-conscious. We’ll simply examine you and treat you well like we would any other patient. In fact, we’ll praise you for taking a step to maintain your oral health!
