We Love Taking Care of Young Smiles

Upper Arlington childrens dentist giving a child a high five in dental chair

Your little one deserves a bright smile that lasts the rest of their life. To make sure that happens, you’ll need to give them a strong foundation for good oral health by bringing them to the dentist for checkups and cleanings twice a year. You should also take the time to teach them the best oral hygiene habits such as how to brush properly.

Your child should start seeing the dentist no later than their third birthday or six months after their first tooth has erupted. Starting dental exams early will increase the likelihood that your child’s dentist will be able to catch tooth decay while it’s still relatively easy to manage. These visits are also important for maintaining good oral health during their dental development.

When your child visits Tzagournis Dental Group of Upper Arlington, we will gently clean their teeth and carefully examine their smile for potential issues. If it’s about time for your child’s next dental appointment, please give us a call.

Dental Sealants

We may recommend dental sealants to keep your child’s molars and premolars safe while they’re still developing their brushing skills. Dental sealants are simply a protective coating that closes off the pits and crevices on the chewing surfaces of the molars so that food particles and bacteria are less likely to become trapped in them.

Silver Diamine Fluoride

Silver diamine fluoride helps strengthen the teeth and stop decay from spreading any further. The silver kills the harmful bacteria that cause cavities while the fluoride works to make the enamel more resistant to decay.

Athletic Mouthguards

Never let the young athletes in your life head out onto the field or the court with an unprotected smile. Even if a mouthguard isn’t required, it’s best to make sure your aspiring athlete has one just in case they get hit in the face or mouth. Unlike the pre-formed mouthguards that can be bought over the counter, our mouthguards are specially made for each patient, meaning they can offer much better comfort and protection.

Special Needs Children’s Dentistry

Does your child have any cognitive or physical disabilities that need to be accounted for during their dental visit? We’re more than ready to help! Our team is trained to work with children with a variety of special needs, and we’re prepared to take whatever steps are necessary to make sure they can comfortably and safely get the care that their smiles deserve. When you call our office to make an appointment, please let us know if your child will need any special accommodations.

Frenectomies

There is a small band of tissue called the frenum that attaches the lips to the gums; another frenum keeps the tongue connected to the floor of the mouth. If your child has a frenum that’s too tight, they might not be able to move their lips or tongue properly, and this can get in the way of feeding or speech development. Fortunately, we can easily solve this problem with a frenectomy. After making sure your child is as comfortable as possible, we’ll gently loosen the frenum to free the tongue or lip.

Pulp Therapy

Dental pulp contains all of the tooth’s nerves and blood vessels. If it gets infected, it can be extremely painful for your little one. Call our office right away if your child starts complaining about tooth pain that seemed to come from nowhere. If it’s caused by infected or injured pulp, we can use pulp therapy to stop the pain and protect the rest of the tooth. Pulp therapy may involve removing the entire pulp or just the portion within the crown of the tooth.
