Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary
We may recommend that you get one or more teeth removed if:
- A tooth has incurred severe damage or decay that cannot be repaired with fillings or a crown.
- We need to make room in the mouth for dentures or orthodontic treatment.
- A tooth is impacted (stuck beneath the gumline).
- Your wisdom teeth are threatening your oral health.
- A child has a primary (baby) tooth that has overstayed its welcome. We may need to remove it to make room for incoming adult teeth.
- We need to remove a tooth to stop an oral infection from spreading and causing further harm.
The Process of Removing a Tooth
Most tooth extractions are pretty straightforward. First, we numb your mouth. We may also administer sedation. Once you are comfortable, we use an instrument called an elevator to lift the tooth out of its socket. Then, we grip it with forceps and rock it back and forth to break the ligaments that are holding it in place. Once the tooth is out, we clean the socket and place gauze to control bleeding.
Before you leave our office, we may talk to you about your tooth replacement options. In most cases, tooth replacement is necessary in order to prevent future oral health complications.
Tooth Extraction Aftercare
Here are some tips to promote a smooth recovery after your tooth extraction procedure:
- Keep your fingers and tongue away from the extraction site.
- Take all medications as prescribed by our team.
- Do not smoke.
- Do not drink through a straw.
- Keep your head propped up on pillows when you are sleeping.
- Avoid hard and crunchy foods. Instead, eat a soft diet.
- Get plenty of rest.
- Regularly rinse your mouth with warm salt water.
- Use a cold compress to minimize swelling and ease discomfort.
- Attend all follow-up appointments as recommended by our team.
- Pursue tooth replacement as soon as your circumstances allow.
Understanding the Cost of Tooth Extractions
The cost of tooth extractions can depend on a few factors. During your appointment, we will examine your mouth and consider the details of your unique situation before we provide a price estimate. We will also make sure that you understand your payment options. We welcome insurance, and we even have an in-house membership plan to help our patients save. We want the process of paying for your treatment to be as easy and stress-free as possible!
Factors That Can Affect Tooth Extraction Cost
Dental care is always highly personalized. Many factors can affect the price of your care, so it is difficult for us to offer any specific numbers before we have a chance to examine you. The cost of your extraction procedure may be affected by the following:
- The specific tooth that needs to be removed. Due to their location in the mouth, some teeth are more challenging than others to extract. Fees vary accordingly.
- The number of teeth we must remove. Logically, the cost associated with removing one tooth is less than that associated with removing multiple teeth.
- Complicating factors. We can perform most extractions right here in our Upper Arlington office. However, we sometimes refer patients to local specialists, whose pricing may be different from ours.
- Additional care. Sedation during your procedure, as well as tooth replacement afterward, can have a significant effect on the total cost of your care.
Does Dental Insurance Cover Tooth Extractions?
In most cases, yes, dental insurance does cover tooth extractions. Depending on the details of your procedure, your care could be anywhere from 50% to 80% covered. (Non-surgical extractions are usually classified as a minor procedure and receive 80% coverage, whereas more complex extractions are considered a major service and are only 50% covered in most cases.) Our team welcomes PPO dental insurance, and we will be happy to help you file claims so you can receive all the benefits that you are entitled to.

Tooth Extractions FAQs
Our team is always ready to help you get back on the path to sound oral health by performing safe and gentle tooth extractions. Before you request an appointment, though, you may want to learn more about this procedure and what to expect from it. Below, you will find answers to some common questions. If your specific points of interest are not touched on here, give us a call. We will be happy to share our knowledge!
Does Getting a Tooth Extracted Hurt?
We want our patients to be as comfortable as possible during tooth extractions. Therefore, we always thoroughly numb the mouth. In many cases, we also administer sedation. Thanks to these provisions, you may feel little to nothing as we are removing the tooth.
After the anesthesia and sedation wear off, you can expect some soreness and swelling. Our team will give you tips to help you enjoy an easy recovery. For example, you may need to get extra rest and take pain medications. If you experience any severe or unusual pain, or any other strange symptoms, call us right away. We will strive to find the cause of the problem and provide appropriate treatment.
Is There an Alternative to a Tooth Extraction?
If dental problems are caught early enough, the need for tooth extractions can usually be prevented. Therefore, if you suspect that one of your teeth is damaged or decayed, we encourage you to visit us ASAP. With restorative treatments, we may be able to help you keep your tooth for many years to come.
In some situations, though, extraction is really the best course of action. This is true when a tooth is so badly damaged that restoring it would be impractical or impossible. It is also commonly the case with troublesome wisdom teeth or supernumerary (extra) teeth.
What Are My Options for Replacing a Missing Tooth?
There are a few different ways to replacing missing teeth:
- A fixed bridge uses crowns on the teeth next to the empty space to support a pontic (artificial tooth). The treatment process is relatively fast, and the results can last for up to a decade or longer.
- Dentures, whether they are full or partial, are popular because they are cost-effective and natural-looking. They are usually recommended in cases of fairly extensive tooth loss.
- Dental implants are prosthetic tooth roots that can support crowns, bridges, and dentures. They can replace any number of missing teeth and have the potential to last a lifetime.
Can I Leave the Space Empty After a Tooth Extraction?
If you get your wisdom teeth or extra teeth removed, there is likely no need to think about getting them replaced. In most other cases, though, it would be best to pursue tooth replacement. Otherwise, you might face some significant complications, including:
- Future tooth loss
- Dental drift (the remaining teeth drifting out of place)
- A weakened jawbone
- Negative effects on the appearance of your face and smile
